Pain Relief

Pain is the number one reason that people come for treatment. That’s because Chinese medicine and massage give fast and lasting pain relief without surgery or medication. Everyday in the clinic, we help people resolve acute pain like muscle strains and joint sprains and manage chronic pain like migraines, low back pain, arthritis and menstrual pain.

What is pain?

Pain is your body’s reaction to trauma, including physical injury, overuse, stress, or emotional upset. It is a warning sign that should make you stop and think about what you are doing. If the pain is out of proportion to the activity you’re doing, has no obvious cause or doesn’t go away of its own accord, then you should have it treated. Don’t just ignore it and keep doing what you’re doing. Come as soon as you identify a problem and start recovering now.

All pain is different.

There are many different types of pain and countless causes of pain. Headaches are obviously different to back pain so why should you take the same medication to treat both? Pain caused by a fall is different to pain caused by joint degeneration in old age so Chinese medicine treats each differently. When you come see us for pain relief, we will determine the cause of your specific pain problem and treat accordingly for you on that day. When you come for follow-up care, your treatment will be slightly different because your condition will have changed. In this way you get the most appropriate treatment for you at that exact moment. This custom-made approach to medicine is what gives you the best results.

How we can help

We use acupuncture and massage as the main treatments for most painful conditions. In some cases, especially chronic ones, we give herbs as well. You can choose to have a combination of treatments or choose acupuncture or massage only... We'll give you our recommendation but, the choose is always yours.

From our perspective as Chinese medicine practitioners, pain indicates an imbalance in your body’s normal functions. Pain is always a result of stagnation, which means that your energy is not flowing correctly. When your energy becomes stagnant some areas are flooded with excess energy creating painful pressure while other areas may be deprived of energy causing weakness. Acupuncture removes the obstruction so that energy can begin flowing correctly and then the pain goes away.

To give fast and long lasting results, your pain treatments will focus on relieving your painful symptoms, correcting any contributing health imbalances and removing the original cause of your pain. This is a three step process:

1.
We treat the painful area to give quick symptom relief.

By choosing acupuncture points that benefit the painful area, we are able to encourage your energy to flow normally. This releases the stagnant build up of energy and blood and allows fresh energy and blood to nourish and release the painful area. We combine this with remedial massage techniques to soften tense muscle tissue, release painful muscle contractions and promote fluid circulation to the sore are. This is how our treatments are able to clear toxins, reduce inflammation, diminish, swelling, improve movement and relieve pain. This provides relief from painful symptoms.

2. We identify and treat the underlying imbalances that led to your

pain.

To get lasting relief from pain, we identify and correct the underlying imbalance in your body’s functions which led to your painful energy stagnation. Why did you get this specific type of pain in this area of your body? Acupuncture and herbs will nourish the underlying weakness and correct the circulation problems that have contributed to your painful condition. In this way Chinese medicine can bring your body back into balance so you get lasting pain relief.

3.
We provide lifestyle advise to prevent reoccurrence.

It is important to figure out what caused the the underlying imbalances and energy stagnation that led to your pain in the first place. It may have been from incorrect sporting technique, excessive stress, poor diet, poor posture, exposure to temperature extremes, overuse, repetitive movements, inadequate rest or from an inherited condition (yes you may be able to blame your parents). Each of these causes will lead to different energetic imbalances which over time can cause pain. We will give you advice on which of these factors may be contributing to your pain and will advise you how to correct them. This may mean specific stretches, restorative exercises, meditation techniques or referral to physiotherapist or osteopath.

What to expect from treatment
Expect to get relief from your pain. Your specific result will vary, but from experience most people’s pain can be treated.

How long will pain relief take?
You should expect a gradual reduction in the intensity and frequency of your pain. Acupuncture and massage are natural healing processes and this can take time. In general, the longer you’ve had your pain, the longer it will take to treat. An acute injury like a sprain or strain usually only needs a few treatments over a couple weeks. Twenty years of migraines or arthritis can take months or longer to get under control, but you will feel progressively better through the whole treatment process.

How often do I need treatment?
Acute injuries get treatment one or twice a week for a short period. Chronic pain needs treatment once a week or once a fortnight until symptoms are controlled then they are given less frequently. Herbs for chronic pain are taken daily.

Can acupuncture and herbs cure my pain?
Some conditions will be completely cured. Life long pain or degenerative diseases will be managed so you are much more comfortable, have less frequent pain episodes and so your pain does not worsen. Rarely, someone’s pain cannot be successfully treated with Chinese medicine. In these cases we will refer you to a different therapy that will work better for you.

Does acupuncture hurt?
You will be pleasantly surprised to find that acupuncture is quite a comfortable treatment. Most points will be completely painless. A few points may feel sore or have a dull aching sensation. You should not feel any sharp painful feelings.

How do I start treatment?
Contact our clinic to arrange your initial consultation and treatment.   An initial cacupuncture consultation and treatment will take 60 - 90 minutes and will include a diagnosis, an acupuncture treatment with massage and a treatment plan. You can also have massage on its own as a 45 minute or 60 minute treatment.
